How to Apply for GTIN Exemption on Amazon

Amazon mandates that products sold on its marketplace must possess a unique identifier, such as a UPC (Unique Product Code) or a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number). In the event that you develop a product lacking an identifier, you are required to request a GTIN Exemption. This will allow you to list products without barcodes on Amazon.

Please Note: You must submit a separate GTIN Exemption request. In some cases, Amazon is granting these approvals globally so you won't have to apply for each category. However, it's possible they may want you to apply for each category so be prepared to do so if needed.

To apply for a GTIN exemption on Amazon, please follow the steps shared below.

Step 2. "Pretend" to Launch a Product

We are now going to "pretend" to launch a product. This is the same process as launching a manual product. However, we are not going to complete the process. We are just going to start the process.

Please Note: If you access the screens shared in these steps and you do not see that you need to apply for the GTIN, this means you already have it. You only need to submit this application once.

Once you've accessed your "Manage inventory" page, click on "Add a product".

Next, select "I'm adding a product not sold on Amazon".

Step 3. Choose the Product Category

Now we are going to choose the product category.

For this next step, it's possible that your screen will not show the exact options shared here as there has been reported inconsistencies between each seller account. However, the choices for each step will be the same to guide you through the process.

To begin, type in the Item name and then select Product type.

Please Note: You may not be able to select the product type. Instead, you may see a field that prompts you to type in text and it will auto populate for you as shown below:

In this case, you want to choose the correct category. You can choose the following for each product type:

  • For Jewelry, choose "Clothing, Shoes and Jewelry"
  • For T-Shirts, choose "Clothing"
  • For all other products, choose "Home and Kitchen"

Step 4. Provide the Brand Name and ID

Once you've selected the product type, scroll down to where it says Brand Name and Product ID. Under Brand Name, check the box for "This product does not have a brand name".

Then under Product ID, check the box for "I don't have a product ID".

Then click "Next" to continue.

Step 5. Finalize GTIN exemption Submission/Approval

At this step, there are two options that may happen.

  1. You may see the words "Apply Now" appear under the "I don't have a Product ID" option from the previous step. If you are prompted, click on "Apply Now" and then wait for a confirmation email.

  2. Your GTIN exemption may be automatically granted. In this case, you will see the pop up shared below. If this happens, click on "Acknowledge" to continue.

Now you are all done! You can tell you are done if you see the screen below that's asking you for more information:

You do not need to provide this information as you are not actually launching a product. You can close the browser or navigate away from this page. Once the application is approved (if it wasn't done automatically) you can upload products from Gearbubble using brand name "generic".

Guidelines for Your Amazon Product Listings

Please take note of the following guidelines for your products:

  • You must use unique titles for your products. They can not be repeated.
  • Your titles cannot use phrases combined with the word gift, such as "Birthday Gift" or "Anniversary Gift".
  • Your product titles must be 125 characters or less.
  • The brand name entered in the application must align with the brand name displayed on the product or its packaging (use Generic, or your own brand name if you have one).
  • Your first products images should have a transparent background.
  • The brand must be permanently featured on the packaging or product (if you have a brand name).

Following these steps, you will get the GTIN exemption approval and be ready to upload products from GearBubble to Amazon. If you need any further assistance, don't hesitate to contact our support through chat (8AM-5PM PDT everyday) or email
